Kara Kelty staff photoKara Kelty grew up believing in the power of public service to improve the lives of others, particularly children. She has worked from the preschool to the university setting to advance educational outcomes for children and youth. She is the cofounder of KinderCamp, a nationally recognized program to increase educational access and equity.

Kara received a B. A. in Political Science from Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, and her master’s degree in Education from Northern Arizona University. A self-described idealist, she began her career as a United States Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines and Guatemala. She has continued her civic engagement by serving three terms in elected office – 2 terms as a city councilmember and one term on the Flagstaff Unified School District Governing Board. She has served as principal to two different charter schools and has worked on educational policy and increasing funding while working in the nonprofit arena.

A mother to two children who attended different schools and were happy with their student experience, Kara has a rich perspective of the factors critical to school success. She is a strong proponent of youth engagement and has created numerous leadership programs to elevate student voice and influence in decisions that have an impact on their life choices and opportunities.

“FALA is a community treasure. As a former school principal, I have seen students thrive when they are able to attend a school that supports their academic and social- emotional needs while fostering their creativity and passion. I am excited to join the talented team at FALA to help cultivate financial stability and recruit and retain teachers and students.” -Kara Kelty
