Janeece Henes staff photo

Janeece is an artist/educator/researcher and comes with 26 years of teaching/educational experience. In the academic year, 2022-23 she served as art education faculty at Northern Arizona University (NAU), and she began teaching at FALA in 1998.

Janeece earned her Bachelor of Science in Art Education from Northern Arizona University, a Master’s Degree in Education from Ohio University and currently pursuing her Ph.D. sustainability in education at Prescott College.

Being an educator and a servant leader her life’s calling. The calling to be a servant leader in education is a great responsibility and it must come from a place of love, moral fortitude, responsiveness, and humility. Being an educator, she is in service to all students, whole-heartedly and holistically. As a leader her purpose is to build others up and work in collaboration for the common good, equity and justice in educational institutions. Equity-minded educators share power with students, families, and the full educator team.

She is passionate about educational leadership and delights in collaborating with youth and colleagues to make educational institutions flourish. coursework focus has been in:  Equity in Education, Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, Ethical Leadership, Community Engagement, Art as Social & Environmental Practice, Social Justice/Art Education, Critical Youth Studies, and Education for Sustainability.  The methodologies are in Critical/Youth Participatory Action Research, and Art Based Research. Her dissertation focuses on the visual art/interventions and experiential learning that prepares young people to live civically engaged lives.

Her deep passion is in community art education is at FALA through place-based experiential learning trips to New York, San Juan & Colorado Rivers, Chicago, Border/Mexico, and Central America creating art in community, cultural exchanges, living with host families, doing service-learning projects, and humanitarian aid. She strongly believes in involving her students in socially engaging art practices. She collaborates and organizes initiatives with her students to be civically engaged citizens and 21st century artists.

She serves on the One New Education Board providing scholarships for girls’ education worldwide since 2015. Janeece is also an artist practitioner, creating mixed media art works with beeswax, pastes, pigments inspired by the regional flora and fauna as well as an outdoor enthusiast, paddling rivers, and riding bikes partner Steve.

Janeece is excited to return to FALA and further develop the teacher-powered school model where students learning is at the center, and teachers, students and families are a community are collaborators, and learners in school’s mission, habits of hands, hearts, and mind; in cultivating present and future leaders. FALA is a lab of praxis in fostering real world integration knowledge and skills by doing, leading, and serving.
